Goldenrod

With a name like goldenrod, you know this plant has to be a good pick for adding sunny shades to the garden. This easy-growing perennial blooms in fall and is a major attractor of butterflies.

Note: Goldenrod has a bad reputation for causing allergy problems but it's rarely an issue for gardeners. Ragweed, which doesn't have showy flowers, is much more commonly the cause of the summer and fall sniffles.

Size: From 2 to 6 feet tall, depending on variety.

Growing conditions: Full sun and well-drained soil.

Graham Thomas rose
